40 years ago, construction began on the large Marzahn housing development on the outskirts of Berlin. Together with the neighboring district of Hellersdorf, it is now the largest prefabricated housing estate in Germany, with 250,000 residents. Since reunification, the district has been the scene of intense urban redevelopment. As host of the International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA) in 2017, the diversity of urban greenery was expanded and a tourist highlight was created in the area. In 2018, the focus will be on further densification for housing and improvement of weak neighborhoods. The tour explains the urban development concept of the GDR era as well as the redevelopment, conversion, and expansion measures since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Against the backdrop of the scarcity of living space in Berlin, many new things are being created that are well worth seeing.
