Careful urban renewal and redevelopment

Where 19th-century blocks meet today’s challenges: experience Berlin’s Gründerzeit districts as living laboratories for sustainable urban development.
In Berlin, careful urban renewal emerged as a response to the large-scale demolition policies of the 1960s and 1970s. Today, it forms the foundation for the city’s ongoing urban renewal programs, particularly in the historic Gründerzeit neighborhoods built after the Hobrecht Plan of 1862. These dense inner-city quarters still define Berlin’s urban landscape and represent some of the city’s greatest transformation potential.
This tour highlights how these vibrant neighborhoods are adapting to today’s challenges—including the mobility transition, sustainable infrastructure, and climate adaptation.
We will visit selected projects in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg, developed during the 1987 International Building Exhibition and after the reunification of Berlin. Together, they illustrate how renewal strategies continue to balance history, social life, and urban innovation.
