Capital City Berlin

Buildings of glass and concrete of the German Bundestag, next to the river spree. A boat is visible on the river and in the background i the dome of the parliament building.

In 1991, the Bundestag decided to make Berlin the federal capital. In 1999, the Bundestag began its work in Berlin in the historical Reichstag building, refurbished after plans of Norman Foster.

Even 25 years after the move from Bonn, the expansion of the capital’s functions continues. What values does the built architecture symbolize? Which historical references were made and which were not? How can the security needs of these institutions be reconciled with the image of a cosmopolitan metropolis? What role did sustainability and climate adaptation play in planning and construction?

We will seek answers to these questions together with our guests on a tour along the focal points of the capital’s planning, the Spreebogen and the Spree Island.
