Former airfield Tempelhof

Tempelhofer Feld: Berlin’s Largest Urban Open Space.
Discover History, Conservation, and the Future of a Landmark on a Guided Tour
Tempelhof Central Airport ceased operations in 2008. Since then, the Tempelhofer Feld, covering 360 hectares (890 acres), has become Berlin’s largest inner-city recreational and green space — and a unique example of transforming historic infrastructure into vibrant public space.
Today, the field is a hub for sports, leisure, barbecuing, urban gardening, and large-scale open-air events. Diverse — and sometimes conflicting — uses are coordinated by the “Feldrat” (Field Council) to balance recreation, nature conservation, and event management.
Tour highlights include:
-
History and transformation of the former airport
-
Planning and usage concepts since 2008
-
Nature conservation and maintenance plans for local flora and fauna
-
Stakeholders and participation structures, including the Field Council
-
Current urban development debates on proposed housing projects by the Berlin Senate
👉 This tour explores both the historic significance of the site and its role in urban climate adaptation, recreation, and civic engagement.
